Michael Mauriel, Patent Attorney
Mike loves the art and science of patent law. He strives to master the technical and legal issues of every case he handles, be it a patent application, patent opinion, or a patent litigation. He believes that clarity of thought and expression, rooted in legal, technical, and factual understanding, are the cornerstones of effective patent advocacy.
Mike's work includes a variety of patent prosecution, analysis, litigation, and transaction work. He has prepared and prosecuted patent applications in a variety of technology areas including microwave guides, computer networking systems, interactive media systems, integrated circuit design including several aspects of programmable logic devices, photonic devices, superconductors, medical information management systems, mobile applications, machine vision, alternative energy, steering systems, bioinformatics, and genetic analysis instruments as well as deep learning and other machine learning techniques as applied to bioinformatics, genetic analysis instruments, and other life science applications. Recently, he prepared several patent applications in the field of quantum computing and is thoroughly enjoying getting up to speed on the technology.
He has prepared patent opinions regarding a variety of technologies. He has represented and counseled clients in negotiations regarding several disputes involving large patent portfolios. He served as co-counsel in several complex patent litigation matters involving computer telephony. He has also helped clients manage and monetize patent portfolios.
Mike established Mauriel Kapouytian Woods LLP in 2007. MKW become a widely respected technology law firm and, at the time of its merger with Maschoff Brennan, was the only firm under 40 lawyers to be named (for 2023 and 2024) National Tier 1 in Patent Law by US News & World Report Best Law Firms.
Mike served as Co-Chair of Patent Prosecution at Maschoff Brennan Gilmore Israelsen & Mauriel, LLP (dba Maschoff Brennan) from the time of its merger with MKW in 2024 until his departure in July of 2026. From 1998-2003, Mike was an associate in Morrison & Foerster's Electronics, Software, and Telecommunications Patent Group. He began his legal career as a law clerk, in 1997-98, to the Hon. Daniel M. Friedman at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
